Here are Six green practices that we have implemented in order to take part in our contribution towards a greener tomorrow.

1. Eliminate single use Toiletries:

We have taken the decision to replace shampoo and bath gel minis with refillable dispensers and larger bottles. Plastic pollution is an urgent global crisis and the time is now to think 'reusable' instead of 'disposable

2. Solar Geyser

We have installed solar powered geysers in order to cut our CO2 emissions by almost 50%. At the same time, we are conserving non-renewable fuels for purposes which there are currently no easily available renewable energy sources.

3. Recycling programme

The only plastics we still have on the property is that of water bottles, however we have taken the conscious decision to partake in a recycling programme which requires us to collect all empty plastic water bottles and provide them to our local recycling plant, this results in reducing the need for extracting, refining and processing raw materials which is a substantial contributor to water and air pollution.

4. We support local produce

We have made the choice buy food from local food producers, There are many benefits to buying locally grown food it creates important economic opportunities, provides health benefits and helps to reduce environmental impact. Purchasing local produce has an array of benefits for the environment such as:

· Local farmers are encouraged to use sustainable farming practises

· Protects local land and wildlife

· Protection of genetic diversity.

5. Installation of energy efficient LED bulbs

LED lights are up to 80% more efficient than traditional lighting such as fluorescent lights.. Winter Recipe - Homemade Butternut Soup!

With Winter approaching fast here in South Africa, we decided to ask our chef, Owen, for his best soup recipe so that we can share it with all of you!

If there is just one soup you make this month, absolutely make it this one. There’s something a little magical about this recipe, I guess or you could also just say alarmingly easy to eat bowl after bowl after bowl.

Ingredient List

1 large butternut squash, halved vertically* and seeds removed
1 tablespoon olive oil, plus more for drizzling
½ cup chopped onion
1 teaspoon salt
4 garlic cloves, pressed or minced
1 teaspoon maple syrup
⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
3 to 4 cups vegetable broth, as needed
1 to 2 tablespoons butter, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

1.Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the butternut squash on the pan and drizzle each half with just enough olive oil to lightly coat the squash on the inside (about ½ teaspoon each). Rub the oil over the inside of the squash and sprinkle it with salt and pepper.

2.Turn the squash face down and roast until it is tender and completely cooked through, about 40 to 50 minutes (don’t worry if the skin or flesh browns—that’s good for flavor). Set the squash aside until it’s cool enough to handle, about 10 minutes.

3.Meanwhile, in a large soup pot, warm 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat until shimmering. Add the chopped onion and 1 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring often, until the onion has softened and is starting to turn golden on the edges, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute, stirring frequently. Transfer the contents to your stand blender

4.Use a large spoon to scoop the butternut squash flesh into your blender. Discard the tough skin. Add the maple syrup, nutmeg and a few twists of freshly ground black pepper to the blender. Pour in 3 cups vegetable broth, being careful not to fill the container past the maximum fill line (you can work in batches if necessary, and stir in any remaining broth later).

5.Securely fasten the lid. Blend on high (or select the soup preset, if available), being careful to avoid hot steam escaping from the lid. Stop once your soup is ultra creamy and warmed through.

6.If you would like to thin out your soup a bit more, stir in the remaining cup of broth. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil, to taste, and blend well. Taste and stir in more salt and pepper, if necessary.

7.If your soup is piping hot from the blending process, you can pour it into serving bowls. If not, pour it back into your soup pot and warm the soup over medium heat, stirring often, until it’s nice and steamy. I like to top individual bowls with some extra black pepper.

- We get asked this question ALL the time and the answer is YES!!! Like all major cities in the world, there are certain areas to avoid however that shouldn't take away from the experiences and good moments you will share whilst on your trip to South Africa. However below we have included some safety tips for your journey.

SAFETY TIPS
• Make sure no one can see you enter your PIN or transaction amount at an ATM and never accept any help from strangers.
• Avoid carrying all your valuables (including your passport) and large sums of cash in your purse.
• Use a reliable registered taxi service.
• Store emergency numbers on your phone and make sure it is charged before you leave your hotel
• Don’t allow your children to wander off on their own make sure you always have an eye on them

2. What is your booking and cancellation policy?

- All of our bookings can be made online through our website or through the contact us now button, our friendly on hand staff will be willing to assist you in every process of the way to ensure a smooth booking process. Upon booking a 50% deposit will be deducted in order to secure the reservation with the balance payable upon arrival.

- Yes, All of our rates are inclusive of Bed & Breakfast which is served daily in our dining room on a made to order hot breakfast. Unfortunately we do not have rates that are exclusive of Breakfast.

5. Do you cater for vegetarian, gluten-free, diabetic and Halaal guests?

- Yes, all of the above can be catered for if dietary requirements are indicated at time of booking or communicated to us prior to your arrival.

In terms of Halaal offering we do stock a entirely separate pan that is used to only cook Halaal approved meat which is sourced from a certified and registered Halaal butchery.

6. Do you offer a pick up service from the airport?

- Yes, we can arrange a meet-and-greet pick up from the airport for you. The cost is dependant on vehicle type and number of passengers, Kindly provide your exact flight details including flight number, and we will confirm the arrangements and cost for you.

7. Do you exchange money?

- We unfortunately do not exchange any foreign currency at Gardenia Boutique Hotel, however as mentioned we are situated 700m away from a Shopping mall which has banks in that offer this service, should this be the make or break of your accommodation choice please feel free to contact us to see if we can be of assistance.

8. Do you serve meals such as Lunch and Dinner at Gardenia Boutique Hotel?

- This can be arranged and meals cooked by our superb in house chef however please take note that should you wish to have Lunch or Dinner at Gardenia Boutique Hotel you are required to let us know beforehand as we do not believe in frozen food and rather buy all of our ingredients fresh.

- Yes, we have an onsite parking lot that can accomodate all guest vehicles, our parking is free and of no additional charge. We have CCTV camera's throughout our parking lot in order to ensure the safety of your vehicle whilst on out premises.

10. Do you offer Laundry facilities?

-Yes we do offer laundry services and guarantee same day turnaround provided that laundry is handed in to reception before 10am. The charge of laundry is dependant on weight and items provided for laundry.

11. Is the reception open 24 hours a day?

-No, our reception is open from 7am until 6pm daily however there is always a staff member onsite that is available to assist you and your requests regardless of the time.

12. Do you allow pets?

- Whilst we are animal lovers ourselves, we unfortunately do not allow any pets onsite.

13. Which credit cards do you accept for payment?

- We accept MasterCard, Visa, Diners club and American Express credit cards

14. Do you allow smoking?

- All of our rooms are non-smoking rooms however we have designated locations situated around property where smoking is allowed.
